Star Wars Friday

Woot Woot! It’s finally Friday here and that means the weekend is on its way. I wanted to mention something that I came across on the internet “Anti-bullying Starts in First Grade” by Carrie Goldman.

The blog is written by the mother of Katie, a little girl who loves Star Wars. To sum it up, this little girl took a Star Wars water bottle to school and the boys teased her that only boys could like Star Wars- not girls. Katie was teased so much about it that one day she chose to carry a pink water bottle. Carrie Goldman does make it clear that these little first grade boys are not mean kids, but like all young children they lack social skills and that Katie has even played with a few of the boys from time to time. I encourage you to read the blog even if you’re not a Star Wars fan. It is well written and Carrie hits the mark when it comes to bullying.

This event happened last year, but the amount of support that Katie has received from the online world still continues to this day. In fact, December 16th is Wear Star Wars, Share Star Wars Day. This is a day to support anti-bullying, and is just a day to be proud to be a Geek

How do you celebrate? Well, wear your favorite Star Wars shirt and donate a toy to a needy child. It wouldn’t hurt to donate a Star Wars toy to a girl too. Of course this time of year there are many locations to drop of a toy.  Mine is located at my local Wal-Mart but, churches, hospitals, and even schools have donated toys  to charities.

I’m planning on celebrating this day and remembering that it’s okay to be a girl and to be a geek!
